Mastery Connect and Decimals

I've been using Mastery Connect to check for understanding on 5.3 F- representing quotient of decimals to hundredths place. Using the tests that are on Mastery Connect--- students not making that connection as well as when they use Nearpod. Maybe the presentation and interactive lessons make for better student geared. But the similar problem posted on mastery connect showed me only 70% got mastery. Maybe it's the image. What's the straight line value represent?? I'll have to make a padlet and have students respond to this.

???

Got 100% students right!

These pictorial models will be driving me____!

  1. I have read the question three times and picture does not help at all. Where are the pecans? How in the world does that look like a reasonable container for pecans? I could see that word problem make an ESL student struggle with mere comprehension.

  3. Dang! I'm so lost. Like Annie, I don't understand the graphic either. Is it a poor question? Looking forward to learning what the Padlet tells you!

  4. Straight computation is always so much easier. Then they can choose to solve it however they want, and draw their own pictures. It is so frustrating when the test gets in the way of the knowledge! I love that you are giving your students the chance to share what they are thinking instead of trying to puzzle through this on your own. Their insight can be so meaningful.

  5. Agree. More usage of both technologies has made me able to create the math problems student friendlier.
